Cowboys player killed in alcohol related auto accident

A week after the football world was shocked by the murder-suicide involving Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Javon Belcher, another tragedy involving an NFL player has people scratching their heads. Early Saturday morning, Dallas Cowboys linebacker Jerry Brown was killed when the car he was riding in (and driven by teammate Josh Brent) struck a curb and crashed near State Highway 114 and Loop 12 in Irving, Texas.

According to a DallasNews.com report, Irving Police say that Brent was impaired when he lost control of his 2007 Mercedes just after 2:00 a.m. when it hit the curb and flipped over. Police affidavits indicate that officers could smell alcohol on Brent's breath after they interviewed him at the scene. Reports also indicate that Brent and Brown were coming from Privae - a private nightclub that frequently hosts Cowboys players.

Investigators are currently looking to see if the club served alcohol to any intoxicated customers, including Mr. Brent.

The Cowboys were noticeably emotional in preparing for their game with the Cincinnati Bengals, as they heard about the accident shortly before their flight to Ohio. Team owner Jerry Jones released a statement saying, "[w]e are deeply saddened by the news of this accident and the passing of Jerry Brown. At this time, our hearts and prayers and deepest sympathies are with the members of Jerry's family and all of those who knew him and loved him."

Brown was 25 years old, and was trying to make the team after being cut from the Indianapolis Colts' practice squad in October.
