End of summer Mississippi drunk driving crackdown

In Mississippi, students will be returning to school within the next few weeks. Though school will be back in session, the official end to summer does not occur until after Labor Day, which means many Mississippians will keep the party going until then.

Entertaining and attending parties are a big part of summer fun. Sometimes, the party can turn deadly when individuals get behind the wheel, while under the influence of alcohol. To help decrease drinking and driving throughout the United States, the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched their annual "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign.

This campaign runs from Aug. 21 to Sept. 7, 2015. This crackdown on drunk driving is supported by over $13 million in advertising dollars. There will be a zero tolerance policy on all drivers with a BAC of .08 or higher.

Though the rate of drunk driving has decreased in the past few years, there is still a real possibility that an individual will encounter a drunk driver. Those who drive at night are most likely to encounter a drunk driver. Half of all drunk driving deaths occur in nighttime accidents.

All citizens can help to reduce the number of drunk driving fatalities by wearing a seatbelt. If an inebriated individual is spotted, do not let him or she get behind the wheel. The NHTSA has designed an app to make it easier to call for a cab. The app is called SaferRide and is available for both iPhone and androids.

Whether it is a safety campaign or just a regular Wednesday, decreasing the number of drunk drivers is an important goal. Drunk driving victims can suffer serious injuries that decreases their quality of life.
