Icy conditions can lead to tragic results

In a prior post, we warned our readers about the perils of winter driving in Mississippi and Tennessee. Essentially, black ice is an unpredictable and unforgiving road condition that can lead to tragic accidents. With the recent cold weather passing through our region, we find it prudent to remind our readers of what they can do to avoid accidents.

This reminder is especially important given the rash of accidents that occurred in southwestern Ohio this week. The Ohio State Patrol reported a 50 car pile-up ostensibly caused by a fast moving storm that blanketed roads with a fresh coating of snow. The storm was noted as the culprit in similar accidents in Columbus and Cincinnati. Normally snow is not an immediate threat, but when it is melted by the heat reflected from vehicles, and frozen by falling air temperatures, ice patches can form.

Also, black ice is commonly invisible to drivers before it is too late. As such, icy conditions are a definite concern on the roads of northern Mississippi and western Tennessee.

So what can drivers do? Of course, they can reduce their speed. Slowing down gives the added time to make evasive actions (if necessary). Also , if a crash is unavoidable, a slow speed crash can be less severe than a high-speed crash.

Also, drivers can stay abreast of weather reports within our region. As we stated before, the best way to avoid an accident is to stay off the roads in bad weather. This is especially important if heavy rains are predicted followed by cold arctic air.

If you have been a weather related auto accident, an experienced attorney can advise you.
