A Mississippi family is reeling after a drunk driving accident that took a 1-year-old’s life. The two-vehicle crash happened in Jackson, and a 30-year-old man who reportedly has a significant arrest record was jailed on a charge of DUI homicide.
A 24-year-old man was driving his SUV in the 6 p.m. daylight of June 15 when the allegedly drunk driver’s truck hit the other man’s vehicle. The man driving the SUV was not injured, but three other occupants besides the deceased infant were transported to University of Mississippi Medical Center.
A 21-year-old occupant of the SUV was injured, though her condition was not reported. A 5-year-old was said to be in good condition, but a 4-year-old and a 2-year-old suffered serious injuries. The driver of the SUV was reportedly not injured.
A picture of the driver now facing charges shows him wearing a neck brace, and a report from The Clarion-Ledger says the 30-year-old has been arrested eight previous times and that he is already on probation in Florida.
The fatal accident happened where Springridge Road and Highway 18 intersection in Jackson, and the accused driver was taken to Hinds County Detention Center.
In no criminal case is a conviction necessary for an individual or family to file a personal injury or wrongful death lawsuit in civil court. The facts of a conviction can strengthen a civil claim, however. Drunk driving is one of many forms of negligence, and victims of DUI accidents should be aware of their legal options for seeing justice done.
