Deadly accident near Hazlehurst claims life of pedestrian

On Behalf of | Jan 16, 2014 | Car Accidents

Investigators with Mississippi police still have not released the name of the 51-year-old man who was fatally injured in an accident near Hazlehurst just days ago. Police say that the reason for this lack of information is because they have not notified the man’s next of kin who will likely be left grieving this month for the loss of their loved one.

What is known about the deadly accident is that it happened on Interstate 55 when the man attempted to cross the roadway. Police say the man was struck by a pickup travelling southbound. The force of the collision caused the 51-year-old to suffer catastrophic injuries that proved fatal in the end. Responding crews pronounced him dead at the scene.

Because police have not released much information, residents in the area are left with a lot of unanswered questions.  Did the driver stop to render assistance to the man after the collision?  Was the driver intoxicated or distracted behind the wheel?  What were visibility conditions like at the time of the crash?  Although police believe that the dark colored clothes the man was wearing may have been a contributing factor in the crash, negligence may still be found on part of the driver.  As a result, the victims’ family may want to seek compensation for their loved one’s death.  And although police believe that the victim may have been from out of state, the victim’s family may still be able to file a claim here in Mississippi in the future.
