Mississippi is a state that provides workers with many opportunities to make a living and support their families. A lot of these careers involve transportation and physical work, which often results in many work-related injuries that require compensation to help with the employee’s recovery.
Recent studies show that the work injury rate in Mississippi is unnaturally high in comparison to the rest of the country. With such a high rate, there have also been many stories where some workers do not get properly paid after an injury. It is important to know these facts if you or a loved one receives an injury on the job in this state.
Too many work fatalities
At the end of last year, the National Employment Law Project (NELP) released a report examining the dangerous conditions of Mississippi. Using statistics from 2011 to 2015, they found that the fatality rate of Mississippi work injuries was twice as high as the national average. They also found that Mississippi had the fourth highest rate of work injury deaths in the nation with an average 6.8 deaths out of 100,000 workers.
Seven months later, the multimedia web portal Big Think released a study examining the most dangerous jobs and states in America. While Mississippi dropped down to eighth on the fatal work injury fatality rates, the whole nation increased in workplace fatalities by 7 percent. Mississippi was in the top 10 for the highest fatality rates for male, female, Caucasian, and African-American workers. They found that transportation jobs such as truckers ranked highest in overall job fatalities in the nation and were the most common work deaths in Mississippi.
NELP’s report also focuses on the unfair treatment workers get after an injury in the state. Despite Mississippi’s incredibly high work injury fatality rate, they found that it had the lowest maximum workers’ compensation for injuries that result in disabilities and the least number of weeks of benefits for the permanently disabled.
With the amount of limitations currently in place by the state’s law, you need to contact a personal injury attorney if you are suffering from any work-related injury. They can help you obtain the compensation you deserve if your workplace is not willing to provide it to you.
