3 ways to drive safely this holiday season

On Behalf of | Nov 5, 2018 | Car Accidents

If you live in Mississippi and plan on making a trip this holiday season, you likely know the importance of safe holiday driving. Not only will you be faced with a higher volume of traffic, you’ll also be dealing with poor weather conditions, which can greatly increase the risk of an accident. The following tips will keep you and other motorists safe over the holidays.

Have your vehicle inspected

If it’s been a while since you had your vehicle serviced, AAA recommends having it inspected before setting out. A properly maintained car is less likely to break down, which can be extremely dangerous when traveling on congested highways. Also, be sure to check out the route you plan to take before driving. That way you can plan out some alternate roads if the weather becomes too bad or if there is a lot of traffic. Mapping out your trip also provides an idea of when you’re supposed to arrive.

Make safe driving a priority

While you can’t control the habits of other drivers, you can ensure you’re driving safely. Maintain a reasonable speed at all times, especially during storms or on slick roads. Also, make sure you’re leaving enough room between yourself and other vehicles in case you need to stop suddenly. If you have children, make sure they’re secured safely in the back seat before leaving to prevent distractions while driving.

Take breaks as needed

If you’re taking a very long trip, be sure to take breaks about every two hours. Fatigued driving is a very serious concern, especially in poor weather conditions. In fact, fatigued driving is just about as dangerous as drunk and distracted driving, as your response time is diminished in the same manner.
