Are there more drunk drivers during the holidays?

It is not just your imagination. Mississippi roads are more dangerous for you and your family during the holidays. This is partly due to the increased amount of alcohol-related crashes.

If you have ever had a fender bender or a more serious accident, you know that it only takes a moment for your life to change forever. The decreased reflexes and impaired judgment of inebriated drivers make the already dangerous roadway even more perilous.

Facing long-term consequences of collision-related injuries is something you would not want to deal with any time of the year, much less during a happy and joyful season. Nevertheless, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation, around 25 percent of motor vehicle fatalities in December involve drunk drivers. This indicates that there are many people sharing the road with you during the holidays that simply do not have any regard for your safety or for their own.

Of course, you would probably not realize immediately that the other party in your collision was drunk. However, if you suspected that alcohol had a role in your accident or injury, it would probably be important to attempt to establish evidence of such. The best way for you to do this is typically to insist on a police report.

It may be tempting for you to forgive and forget during the holiday season. However, although drunk drivers may have extenuating circumstances — and they may deserve your forgiveness — you would be unlikely to forget the long-term consequences of an auto accident injury.
