How can I cope with chronic pain?

On Behalf of | Feb 10, 2019 | Workers' Compensation

If you’ve suffered from a work accident in Mississippi, you may experience chronic pain as a result of your injury. Not only can this be physically debilitating, it can also have an emotional effect as well. To help people cope with chronic pain, Very Well Health offers the following advice.

Work on relaxation

Stress can actually increase the amount of pain you feel on a regular basis. This is because stress causes bodily tension to grow, which in turn could exacerbate your discomfort. While it can be challenging, working on relaxation techniques can keep the pain manageable. Meditation can be useful for taking your mind away from stressors. You might also consider yoga. Because it’s low-impact it can be beneficial for people with impairments or disabilities.

Set up a support network

It often helps to speak with someone who has similar chronic issues. Joining a support group is recommended in this case, as you can spend time with people who are sure to understand what you’re going through. Support groups are also a great way to learn new coping mechanisms or to find about advanced in medicine or therapeutic treatments.

Ask for help

Some days may be a little bit harder than others. In this case, don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. If you live with family, see if they can’t lend a hand with daily household chores and other tasks. You might also need to arrange outside assistance if help is not readily available. You can also ask for help around your community when it comes to grocery shopping or transportation in general. When you have the right assistance you’ll experience a lot less stress on a regular basis.
