Do you support tougher laws to make Mississippi roads safer?

You are probably well aware of the many dangerous behaviors that some Mississippi drivers display while on the road. From speeding to texting to driving while intoxicated, some people make poor choices that place themselves and others at an elevated risk of an accident. You may wonder what lawmakers and others in positions of authority can do to make the roads safer.

Recently, the National Safety Council conducted a study that looked at common dangerous behaviors and what can be done to reduce accidents. It’s clear that in many cases, tougher laws and tighter restrictions on driver behavior can prevent accidents. This particular study found that a majority of those polled is in favor of these measures.

What can tough laws do for road safety?

Drivers are more aware than ever that many accidents are preventable, and most people want laws that will make roads safer. When presented with evidence of how stricter laws can reduce accidents that cause injuries or fatalities, the NSC found that an overwhelming majority favored implementing some of the following:

  • Tightening seatbelt laws, including increasing penalties for violations
  • Installing red light cameras
  • Increasing the number of police on the road
  • Increasing the number of DUI checkpoints
  • Lowering the speed limit
  • Lowering the BAC level from 0.08% to 0.05%

You may wonder how these things could help with the overall number of accidents, but it may help to consider the fact that many traffic fatalities are the result of distracted driving, drunk driving or speeding. Stricter laws and steeper penalties motivate drivers to practice better behaviors behind the wheel.

Perhaps you have experienced first-hand the dangers of reckless behaviors behind the wheel. If you have ever found yourself picking up the pieces after the death of a loved one in an accident or suffering from accident injuries yourself, you understand the importance of doing whatever it takes to make the roads safer for everyone.

What’s next?

After a serious accident, you may be wondering what you can do to move forward and put your life back together. You do not have to walk through the aftermath alone, but you may find it beneficial to work with an experienced personal injury attorney to understand if moving forward with a civil claim is a reasonable option for you.

Mississippi laws allow personal injury victims to seek recompense for their financial losses and other types of damages. If you think this is the right course of action for you, it is smart not to waste any time in moving forward with this process.
