What is fibromyalgia?

Some disabling conditions are more complex than others. This is certainly the case with fibrolmyalgia, which is a condition that causes widespread body pain, along with other debilitating symptoms. The exact cause of this condition is still not widely understood and symptoms often mimic other disorders. This makes it difficult for people experiencing fibromyalgia to receive the proper treatment.

In terms of causes, it's believed that a combination of factors come together to cause painful symptoms. There may be a genetic component since this disorder tends to run in families. People who've experienced physical or emotional injury and infections can also develop fibromyalgia. It's believed that the abnormal behavior of neurotransmitters responsible for sending pain signals is the cause of pain and discomfort that many people with this condition experience.

Along with pain, fibromyalgia is also characterized by issues with brain function. Attention and concentration are often diminished, which some people liken to a "brain fog". Fatigue is another common component. Even after long periods of sleep, many people complain that they wake up tired and remain that way for the rest of the day. The sleep cycle can also be disturbed by fibromyalgia. This usually results from nighttime pain which makes it difficult to remain asleep.

To be diagnosed with fibromyalgia, doctors will first rule out other conditions by administering certain tests. From there, doctors will ask about where the pain occurs and whether the patient experienced for longer than three months. In terms of treatment, patients are recommended to make certain lifestyle changes, such as exercise, eating healthy, and stress reduction. Physical therapy can also be beneficial for reducing daily pain and discomfort. Some patients are also provided medications, including anti-depressants or pain relievers.
