How can I keep kids safe on Halloween?

Halloween is fun for kids and adults alike, provided the right safety precautions are taken. Motorists must be extra alert during the holiday, while parents must make sure their kids understand the importance of pedestrian safety when trick-or-treating. AAA offers these helpful safety tips to prevent injuries and keep kids safe on Halloween.

Children are unpredictable when walking. Kids are prone to forgoing crosswalks and instead cross between cars and other unsafe places. They may also run into traffic without looking. These occurrences highlight how important it is drivers to be cautious when out and about on Halloween. When driving in certain neighborhoods, such as those teeming with trick-or-treaters, make sure you're driving at a safe speed. If you must, travel a few miles under the speed limit so you can react quickly if a child unexpectedly runs into the street.

For their part, parents should make sure their children are wearing highly visible Halloween costumes. If not, kids should wear neon vests or reflective tape on their clothing to signal drivers. Your child can also carry a glow stick or flashlight when trick-or-treating at night, which increases visibility even further. There are other steps kids can take to stay safe.

For example, children under the age of 12 should be accompanied by a parent or guardian when going out. Older kids going out on their own should always be in a large group and should stick to a specific route. Staying in well lit areas with easy to navigate sidewalks is recommended in this case. Kids can also take along a cell phone or other mobile device so they can check with parents throughout the night.
