What happens during a VPP evaluation?

Voluntary protection programs (VPP) are implemented by employers as a preemptive measure to prevent injuries at their place of work. A VPP evaluation conducted by an Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) team must occur before a workplace is allowed to participate in a VPP. The Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development explains what to expect during a VPP evaluation.

The first step is the initial meeting. The OSHA team will explain what’s expected from your workplace in terms of safety standards, as well as the standards used during the review. Along with management, any employees involved in workplace safety programs should also attend. You can also discuss the measures your workplace utilizes to ensure safety for staff.

Before the meeting takes place, you’ll be given a listing of documents needed to for the OSHA team to review. While it can vary from business to business, the list requested is usually comprehensive. As a result, it may take reviewers up to two days before the process is complete. Sample documents include minutes from safety meetings, data on emergency preparedness, the procedures for hazard analysis, safety and health training information, documentation of personal protective equipment, and injury reports.

A walkthrough of your facility will also be completed, as will informal interviews of employees chosen at random. The entire process usually takes about five days depending on how much information is needed to make a determination. A summation of each days’ review will be provided, so you should have an idea of how your business is faring. If any hazards are discovered during the walkthrough, you’ll need to communicate which steps you plan to take to fix them.
