When Mississippi residents get into the vehicle of another person, they are relying on the abilities and diligence of the driver to get to their destination safely. Sometimes, it turns out that trust is misplaced and a passenger ends up fatally injured due to another driver’s negligence. In the seconds it takes for an accident to occur, that victim’s family changes forever.
For instance, because of what happened at somewhere around 8:30 in the morning on a recent Wednesday, the family of a 19-year-old man will never be the same. Before that time, he was traveling with two other people, the 18-year-old driver and the 19-year-old rear seat passenger in the northbound lanes of Interstate 55. When the vehicle reached somewhere near exit 24, it careened off the highway, slammed into some trees and flipped over before coming to a rest.
When troopers with the Mississippi Highway Patrol arrived at the scene, they found the front seat passenger deceased and the other two vehicle occupants injured. The two survivors were taken to separate hospitals with unknown injuries. In the meantime, troopers continue to investigate the cause of the crash.
As the deceased passenger’s surviving family members deal with the fact he was fatally injured due to another driver’s negligence, they will undoubtedly incur significant financial losses and other damages associated with the accident. Few people are emotionally or financially prepared for the sudden and violent loss of a loved one, especially one who is only 19 years old. It may be possible to recover documented financial losses if they exercise their right to file a wrongful death claim against the surviving driver.
