What you should know about anesthesia awareness

On Behalf of | Jan 5, 2021 | Medical Malpractice

Anesthesia errors are one of the most dangerous types of errors. They can result in serious suffering for you. Perhaps the scariest of issues is anesthesia awareness.

At Carlton & Hudson, P.C., we know about this anesthesia-related injury that results in you waking up during surgery and know how terrifying it can be. We want to help protect you against such errors and mistakes by medical professionals.

Definition

Anesthesia awareness is a state of being conscious and aware during surgery but not being able to move. Because of the paralysis, you cannot even let anyone know what is happening to you. You are able to feel everything that is happening to you. It can cause severe physical pain and mental anguish. It can lead to post traumatic stress syndrome in some people.

Causes

The American Association of Nurse Anesthetists explains anesthesia awareness may occur due to errors on the part of the anesthesiologist. It could also be a result of bad hospital equipment.

Most often when it is an error on the part of the technician it is due to not understanding how to properly administer the medication due to some special needs of the patient. For example, if you have certain health conditions, it can be dangerous to give you the normal amount of anesthesia. This requires the anesthesiologist to conduct careful monitoring and administer the medication in a calculated way to protect you from anesthesia awareness while also ensuring the anesthesia does not harm you.
